The Ganga's New Necklaces: 19 Bridges Linking Bihar's Future

Bihar is undergoing a major transformation in transportation infrastructure with the construction of nine new mega bridges across the Ganga River. These additions will bring the total number of Ganga-spanning bridges in the state to 19, significantly enhancing regional connectivity and easing traffic congestion.

Patna district is leading this infrastructure push, with six of the nine new bridges located within its bounds. Among the most prominent is the newly completed six-lane bridge between Aunta and Simaria in Mokama, which runs parallel to the existing Rajendra Setu. Now operational, this bridge is set to significantly reduce traffic pressure in the area.

Another major project is a six-lane bridge under construction between Dighwara in Saran and Sherpur in Patna. Integrated with the upcoming Patna Ring Road, this bridge will improve access and mobility across the region. Additionally, a six-lane bridge parallel to the JP Setu has received approval, while a four-lane bridge is being built alongside the Mahatma Gandhi Setu.

Further strengthening connectivity, the state-funded six-lane bridge between Kachchi Dargah and Bidupur is nearing completion and is expected to open within the year. Construction has also resumed on the four-lane bridge between Bakhtiyarpur and Tajpur, further boosting Patna’s infrastructure.

In Bhagalpur, a four-lane bridge parallel to the Vikramshila Setu is planned to alleviate regional traffic. Additional projects include a four-lane bridge between Agwani Ghat and Sultanganj, another connecting Sahebganj and Manihari, and a proposed bridge at Kahalgaon. Meanwhile, in Begusarai, a six-lane bridge between Matihani and Samho is underway as part of the Raxaul-Haldia Expressway.

Together, these bridges are set to transform Bihar’s transportation landscape, facilitating smoother travel, enhancing economic activity, and connecting communities across the state.
