The Tiruchi City Corporation has appointed a consultant to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the redevelopment of the Central Bus Stand, which spans over six acres in the heart of the city.
Following the commissioning of the Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) at Panjapur, the civic body plans to repurpose the existing bus stand site—operational for over five decades—into a modern urban infrastructure facility, potentially housing a convention centre, office complex, or public service hub.
Previously handling over 2,000 buses daily and serving thousands of passengers, the bus stand's role has shifted post-IBT, creating an opportunity to reimagine the space. As per the 2023–24 Corporation budget, ₹1 crore has been earmarked for the DPR to evaluate project feasibility and identify infrastructure requirements, including soil testing to determine land strengthening needs.
The proposal includes demolishing outdated structures and constructing a multi-storey complex with office spaces and integrated parking. Final specifications—such as building height, design, and floor count—will be based on the DPR findings. Officials emphasise that the project aims to support Tiruchi’s urban growth, improve land use efficiency, and enhance public access to key government services.
