The New Giant of the East: Science City’s Mega Expansion

Kolkata’s Science City is set to develop a modular exposition-cum-conference facility, which is poised to become the largest indoor meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) venue in Eastern India.

The proposed project, with an estimated investment of ₹200–250 crore, will be capable of accommodating over 5,000 attendees. When combined with Science City’s existing auditoriums, the total capacity will rise to around 8,000, surpassing the current largest venue in the region, the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, which has a capacity of 4,000. Science City’s main auditorium seats 2,232 people with a stage designed for 100 performers, while an adjoining mini-auditorium can host 400 attendees.

Spread across approximately three lakh sq. ft., the new modular facility will offer flexible configurations to host large conventions or multiple smaller events simultaneously, enabling year-round utilisation. The project also includes expansion of parking capacity from 500 to 1,000 vehicles and is expected to attract major national and international events.

The development is expected to significantly enhance Kolkata’s MICE ecosystem, boost visitor footfall, and generate additional revenue to support Science City’s upkeep and modernisation, which requires annual funding of around ₹20 crore.
