The New Gold Rush: SCCL & Altmin’s ₹2,250Cr Bet on Lithium

Singareni Collieries Company (SCCL) and Hyderabad-based Altmin have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up India’s first large-scale battery-grade lithium refinery in Telangana, with an investment of ₹2,250 crore.

The refinery, with an annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate, is expected to commence operations by 2027. It will play a strategic role in supporting India’s expanding electric vehicle and energy storage ecosystem. The project will be developed through a joint venture between SCCL—jointly owned by the Telangana and Central governments—and Altmin, leveraging globally benchmarked lithium refining technology. Plans also include securing long-term raw material supply from overseas mineral assets, reducing India’s reliance on imported refined lithium and enhancing energy security.

“The initiative will significantly cut India’s dependence on imported refined lithium, bolster national energy security, and support the rapid growth of the country’s electric vehicle and advanced battery manufacturing sectors,” the Telangana government said, noting that the project positions the state at the forefront of India’s clean energy transition.
