Assam’s Water Resources Minister, Pijush Hazarika, has launched a series of infrastructure projects in Cachar district aimed at controlling river erosion, improving public safety, and securing urban water resources.
The flagship initiative is a ₹400-crore anti-erosion project at Lakhipur, designed to protect the left bank of the Barak River using advanced measures such as geo bags and synthetic fabric. Emphasising the government’s mission-mode approach to flood and erosion management, the minister noted that nearly 1,000 km of embankments have been constructed across the state over the past four-and-a-half years.
In addition, new police stations will be established at Kachudaram and Sonai to strengthen law and order. A ₹2.20-crore project has also been launched to protect Silchar’s critical drinking water supply, while a ₹4.80-crore RCC drain project aims to address long-standing waterlogging problems in the Bilpar area.
