The Tunnel Transformation: Indore-Khandwa’s High-Tech Leap.

The long-awaited Indore–Ichhapur highway project, aimed at easing congestion and improving road safety between Indore and Khandwa, is expected to be completed by December 2026.

A major highlight of the project is the construction of three modern tunnels designed to maintain smooth traffic flow even during heavy rain and dense fog. The development includes a 33.40-km four-lane stretch from Tejaji Nagar in Indore to Balwada in Khandwa, which will provide direct connectivity to Hyderabad via Jalgaon. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is implementing advanced construction techniques such as electronic blasting and the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM) to build the tunnels efficiently and safely.

The project features several key structures, including the 575-metre Bherughat Tunnel, 480-metre Baigram Tunnel, and 550-metre Choral Ghat Tunnel. It also includes a major bridge, a railway overbridge, two viaducts, vehicle overpasses and underpasses, along with multiple minor bridges and culverts.

Once completed, the upgraded highway is expected to significantly reduce travel time and enable safer, faster travel at speeds of 80–90 km/h. The corridor will play an important role in the Indore–Hyderabad transport route, improving the movement of goods and strengthening connectivity between central and southern India.
