Japan’s Tsugami has inaugurated its first assembly and foundry facility in India, located at Oragadam, Chennai, marking a significant step in the company’s global expansion.
The ₹300-crore plant is one of only three Tsugami facilities worldwide, alongside operations in Japan and China. Spanning 3,00,000 sq. ft., it enables end-to-end domestic production of machine tools—from raw materials to finished machines—while supporting an annual assembly capacity of 3,000 machines and a foundry capacity of 6,000 tonnes. The facility is expected to directly employ around 700 people, with an additional 300 employed through its broader ecosystem.
Officials from Japan and Tamil Nadu highlighted the strong industrial collaboration, with JETRO’s Kaoru Shiraishi noting that the facility exemplifies the potential when “Japanese technology” is combined with India’s skilled workforce and growing market. State representatives and Tsugami India’s leadership emphasized that the project strengthens precision manufacturing in India and reflects confidence in Tamil Nadu’s talent pool and industrial ecosystem.
