Turning Gas into Gold: Madhya Pradesh Gets Small-Scale LNG Plant

Madhya Pradesh, June 17, 2024 – In a landmark move towards a sustainable future, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant near the Hatta gasfield. This strategic initiative will bolster the status of the Vindhyan Basin by upgrading it from a Category-II to a Category-I basin, indicating its significant hydrocarbon reserves and production capabilities.

The state-of-the-art LNG plant will employ cutting-edge technology to produce liquefied natural gas, significantly reducing carbon emissions. The project aligns with India's climate change mitigation goals, with LNG being transported by trucks to consumers, enhancing the country's energy infrastructure.

The Hatta discovery marks the culmination of five decades of persistent exploration efforts by ONGC, now poised to add commercial credibility to the Vindhyan Basin. The initiative signifies a major milestone in India's quest for energy self-sufficiency and sustainability.

ONGC has already submitted its field development plan (FDP) to the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), aiming to monetize its assets in the Hatta region. The development of this LNG plant is expected to bring substantial economic and environmental benefits to the region.

India's vast sedimentary basins, covering 3.4 million sq. km, are categorized into three categories based on their hydrocarbon potential and production status. This new venture will significantly contribute to the country's energy landscape, promoting both economic growth and environmental sustainability.
