The Uttar Pradesh State Cabinet has recently approved financial participation in two major water projects—the Lakhwar Multipurpose Project in Uttarakhand and the Renukaji Dam Project in Himachal Pradesh.
The state government will contribute ₹356.07 crore for the Lakhwar project, which has a total cost of ₹5,647.17 crore. Located on the Yamuna River in Uttarakhand, the project includes a 204-meter-high dam, a 300 MW underground powerhouse, and a balancing reservoir with a barrage. Uttar Pradesh’s water share is 31.05%, benefiting states such as Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and UP, with irrigation for 33,780 hectares. The project will also supply 78.83 million cubic meters (MCM) of water for domestic and industrial use and generate 300 MW of power. It is scheduled for completion by December 2031.
Additionally, Uttar Pradesh has approved ₹361.04 crore for its share in the Renukaji Dam Project, to be constructed on the Giri River in Himachal Pradesh. The project has a total cost of ₹6,946.99 crore and will feature a 148-meter-high dam along with a 40 MW power generation facility.
