The Uttar Pradesh government is exploring the launch of Water Metro services in Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj as part of its smart urban mobility strategy aimed at reducing road congestion and promoting tourism through sustainable transport solutions.
A detailed feasibility study will be undertaken to evaluate the technical and financial viability of the project. Inspired by Kerala’s Kochi Water Metro—India’s first electric, battery-powered inland water transport system—the proposed service may offer both intra-city and inter-city connectivity along the Ganga, Saryu, and Yamuna rivers.
The initiative is designed to provide an eco-friendly, efficient, and scenic alternative to road transport, while helping to reduce air pollution and preserve the cultural significance of the rivers.
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL), which developed the original Water Metro, is likely to serve as a consultant. Chief Secretary S.P. Goyal is scheduled to meet KMRL officials to explore collaboration. The move aligns with the state's broader vision of developing clean, river-based mobility and enhancing tourist infrastructure in heritage cities.
