Vizag Rises as Asia's Data Hub: Google's $6 Billion Bet on India

Google, through its parent company Alphabet Inc., is set to invest USD 6 billion to establish a one-gigawatt (1 GW) data centre and supporting power infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This marks Alphabet's first data centre investment in India and will be its largest such facility in Asia in terms of both capacity and financial scale.

Out of the total investment, USD 2 billion will be allocated specifically for renewable energy infrastructure to power the data centre—reinforcing Google’s global commitment to sustainable operations. The project is part of the tech giant’s broader expansion strategy across Asia, which includes major investments in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

In April, Alphabet reiterated its global plan to invest approximately USD 75 billion in data centre infrastructure in 2025.

Highlighting the region’s growing prominence in digital infrastructure, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Human Resources Development, Nara Lokesh, stated that the state has already secured commitments for 1.6 GW of data centre capacity, with plans to scale up to 6 GW over the next five years. The initial 1.6 GW is expected to become operational within 24 months—surpassing India’s current total data centre capacity of 1.4 GW, according to Anarock.

To further enhance global connectivity, the state also plans to develop three undersea cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam, aiming to build a network twice the size of Mumbai’s.
