Vizag’s Slum Makeover: The ₹40 Crore High-Rise Vision

For the first time in Andhra Pradesh, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is set to establish a Slum Rehabilitation Authority.

The move forms part of the broader Visakhapatnam Economic Region (VER) initiative, aimed at transforming urban areas through comprehensive redevelopment. GVMC has submitted two slum redevelopment proposals covering Velampeta and Indira Gandhi Nagar, focusing on improved housing, sanitation, and civic amenities. GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg stated that the projects will redevelop these areas into modern high-rise residential complexes.

Under the plan, the Velampeta project will consist of a G+12 residential building to accommodate 177 families, while Indira Gandhi Nagar will feature a G+6 structure for 110 families. The combined estimated cost of the projects is ₹40 crore. They will be executed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, ensuring no direct financial burden on either the state government or GVMC.

The Commissioner further noted that eligible beneficiaries will receive free housing, while developers will be compensated through incentives such as transferable development rights (TDR) and additional floor space index (FSI).
