The Madurai Corporation is set to undertake a major riverfront development project along the Vaigai River at an estimated cost of ₹76 crore under the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services (TNUIFSL) scheme.
The initiative aims to restore ecological balance and create vibrant public recreational spaces along the 12-km stretch of the river that runs through Madurai. The focus will be on strengthening urban green cover and enhancing the overall riverfront landscape. Administrative approval was granted through a Government Order issued by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department on 4 February 2026. The project will be implemented under the TNUIFSL–KfW Tranche III programme, with tenders expected to be floated in the first week of March.
Key components of the development include the creation of landscaped parks and a major riverfront park at Kochadai, featuring walking tracks, food courts, yoga spaces, and an amphitheatre. A dedicated viewing gallery will also be constructed to accommodate visitors during the annual Azhagar festival celebrations.
