Water Security 2.0: Inside Delhi’s ₹599 Crore Chandrawal Project

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the construction of a new state-of-the-art water treatment plant at Chandrawal to bolster the capital’s water supply infrastructure.

The ₹599 crore project, with a planned capacity of 105 million gallons per day (MGD), is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026. Chairing a review meeting of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to assess preparedness for the upcoming summer season, the Chief Minister noted that the project had remained stalled for several years, leading to a cost escalation of nearly ₹400 crore.

Once operational, the new plant is expected to serve around 11 per cent of Delhi’s population, significantly improving water supply in densely populated areas such as Model Town, Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh, and R. K. Puram.

In addition to the treatment facility, the project includes measures to strengthen underground reservoirs, install water meters, and prevent water contamination. The government also aims to reduce non-revenue water from the current 30–45 per cent to below 15 per cent within the next three years.
