Waterways Go Green: India's First Hydrogen Vessel Launched

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, on 11 December 2025, flagged off India’s first indigenously developed hydrogen fuel-cell vessel at Namo Ghat in Varanasi, marking a major milestone in the modernisation of inland water transport.

The launch reflects the government’s commitment to promoting clean and sustainable transport while strengthening connectivity across the country. With this initiative, India joins nations such as China, Norway, the Netherlands, and Japan that already operate hydrogen-powered vessels. Highlighting the significance of the achievement, Minister Sonowal said the development represents not only technological advancement but also India’s steady progress towards green energy and self-reliant solutions. He further credited the Prime Minister’s leadership for accelerating innovation across key sectors.

The hydrogen-powered vessel forms part of a broader effort to modernise inland waterways through eco-friendly technologies, improved public convenience, and enhanced transport infrastructure nationwide.
