Wind-Solar Winners! MSEDCL Awards 500 MW Hybrid Projects

Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has announced the winners of its latest auction to develop 500 MW of grid-connected intra-state wind-solar hybrid power projects, with an additional greenshoe option of up to 500 MW. Issued in March 2024, the tender saw JSW Energy and Juniper Green Energy secure 200 MW and 75 MW, respectively, by quoting Rs 3.6 per kWh. BN Peak Power (BrightNight) won 76 MW at Rs 3.62 per kWh, and Avaada Energy claimed 75 MW with a bid of Rs 3.69 per kWh.

The tender stipulates that hybrid power projects must integrate both solar and wind components, with each component constituting at least 33 percent of the total contracted capacity. For inter-state projects, the minimum size required is 50 MW at a single site, while intra-state projects need to be at least 10 MW at a single location. Projects either completed or nearing completion without long-term power purchase agreements, as well as those selling power on a merchant or short-term basis, were also eligible.

MSEDCL has emphasized the use of domestically manufactured solar modules listed in list-I of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers. Furthermore, only type-certified wind-turbine models from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s Revised list of Models and Manufacturers are permitted under the tender.

This auction represents a significant step towards enhancing Maharashtra’s renewable energy capacity, ensuring a balanced mix of solar and wind energy. The successful bidders are expected to meet stringent requirements to deliver sustainable and reliable hybrid power to the grid.

These projects will contribute to Maharashtra’s ambitious renewable energy goals, demonstrating the state’s commitment to fostering green energy solutions and reducing its carbon footprint.
