ZF Wind Power Coimbatore, a division of the global ZF Group, is set to invest €50 million to expand its production capacity from 9 GW to 12 GW at its Coimbatore facility. This expansion will solidify the plant's position as ZF’s largest gearbox manufacturing site outside of China. The facility, which has already achieved a significant milestone of producing 50 GW of gearboxes, will further bolster its output to meet growing domestic and international demand for renewable energy solutions.
The expansion is driven by the rising demand for wind energy gearboxes, aligning with global renewable energy targets. The Coimbatore facility, which currently employs over 1,360 people, will add 225 new jobs as part of this growth. With a history of €230 million in investments in its operations, ZF is committed to enhancing its production capabilities to meet the increasing needs of the wind energy sector.
The facility is not only a production hub but also serves as a global service center, capable of servicing up to 700 gearboxes annually, with a focus on gearboxes up to 3 MW. As ZF prepares for both onshore and offshore wind projects in India, the Coimbatore plant will play a crucial role in the company’s strategy to produce an additional 50 GW of gearboxes over the next five years.
In addition to expanding capacity, the facility will see the introduction of a 13.2 MW test bench, which is expected to become operational by the first quarter of 2025. This will allow ZF to further innovate and refine its product range, which currently extends from 1.5 MW to 6 MW gearboxes, ensuring it remains at the forefront of wind power technology.
The €50 million investment underscores ZF's commitment to the renewable energy sector and reinforces the importance of the Coimbatore facility in the company's global operations, particularly as it gears up to produce the next generation of wind gearboxes.
