Sikkim Goes Five-Star: The Hyatt Regency Era Begins

Prem Singh Tamang has laid the foundation stone for the Hyatt Regency Gangtok, a 150-room five-star property in the state capital, aimed at strengthening Sikkim’s premium hospitality infrastructure.

The project is expected to position Gangtok as a high-value destination for tourism, destination weddings, and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events. The hotel’s design will reflect Sikkim’s cultural identity, incorporating local art, regional cuisine, locally sourced produce, and opportunities for local talent.

Currently, Sikkim can accommodate approximately 42,000–45,000 tourists per day. The addition of 150 luxury rooms in the city centre is anticipated to attract higher-spending domestic and international travellers, helping bridge the demand-supply gap in the premium hospitality segment. The move also supports the state’s steady tourism growth, which has recently recorded over 71,000 international visitors.

The initiative aligns with Sikkim’s broader strategy to upgrade tourism infrastructure, enhance visitor experiences, and reinforce Gangtok’s standing as a leading luxury travel destination.
