SAIL's Mega Expansion: Bhilai Plant Set for ₹31,000 Crore Upgrade

Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has received in-principle approval to expand the capacity of its flagship Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Chhattisgarh from 6.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 10.2 MTPA with an estimated investment of ₹31,000 crore. The expansion project is expected to be completed within 42 months and will generate significant direct and indirect employment during both the construction and operational phases. Raw materials for the project will be sourced from SAIL's captive mines as well as domestic and imported suppliers. The capacity enhancement is aimed at strengthening SAIL's steel production capabilities and supporting the growing demand for infrastructure-grade steel. Bhilai Steel Plant, the company's largest integrated steel facility, is the exclusive supplier of rails to Indian Railways and manufactures a wide range of rail products, heavy structural steel, plates, and sheets, including the world's longest 130-metre single-piece rails.
