Tata Steel’s 40 MTPA Vision: A Rs 10,000 Crore Milestone

In a major push toward sustainable manufacturing and capacity expansion, Tata Steel has announced a Rs 10,000 crore investment slated for Jharkhand by 2028. The strategic funding is projected to generate approximately 2,000 direct and indirect jobs while elevating the company's domestic steelmaking capacity from 27.35 MTPA to 40 MTPA.

The comprehensive investment blueprint allocates Rs 7,000 crore toward the pioneering HIsarna and Easy Melting Technology project—highlighted by a new one-million-tonne HIsarna pilot plant in Jamshedpur. Additional allocations include Rs 2,600 crore for expanding the Tinplate Division and Rs 1,500 crore for a new Combi mill.

At the heart of this expansion is the HIsarna process, Tata Steel’s patented low-carbon technology. By bypassing conventional coke and pellet plants, the innovation cuts carbon emissions by about 20 percent, lowers capital expenditures, and enhances flexibility in utilizing domestic coking coal, firmly aligning the company with its long-term net-zero and growth objectives.
