Wheels of Progress: TRSL's JV Boosts India's Rail Self-Reliance

Titagarh Rail Systems (TRSL) has entered the forged wheel manufacturing sector through a joint venture with Ramkrishna Forgings, aiming to alleviate the ongoing shortage of wheelsets that has disrupted rail and coach production. This strategic initiative supports the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and import substitution goals by enhancing domestic production of critical railway components.

TRSL officials noted that monthly wagon output—targeted at 950 to 1,000 units—was impacted by limited wheelset supplies, primarily from the Rail Wheel Factory in Bangalore, the designated supplier under railway contracts.

Describing the venture as both a “national service and a big opportunity,” Vice Chairman and MD Umesh Chowdhary emphasized the need to end dependence on imported forged wheels. With production expected to stabilize from June, the new vertical is set to significantly strengthen TRSL’s manufacturing capabilities and support India’s self-reliance in railway infrastructure.
