$191M Splash: EIB Global Backs India’s Water Future in Uttarakhand

EIB Global, the development arm of the European Investment Bank, has approved a USD 191 million loan to the Government of India to upgrade water and sanitation infrastructure in Uttarakhand.

This marks the EIB’s first investment in India’s water sector and supports the EU’s Global Gateway Investment Agenda. The project is expected to benefit approximately 900,000 residents by modernizing systems through real-time monitoring, automatic meter reading, advanced plant automation, and expanded access to underserved communities.

Over the next five years, the initiative will focus on reducing water losses, improving wastewater treatment, and ensuring a reliable supply of clean water—especially for low-income households.

EIB Vice-President Nicola Beer emphasized the project’s health and social impact. The investment also supports sustainable urban development in Uttarakhand, a state experiencing rapid growth in agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism, while deepening EU-India cooperation through critical infrastructure development.
