The Khambataki tunnel project on the Pune–Satara National Highway is nearing completion, with approximately 90 percent of the work finished and one of the tunnels now opened to the public for trial operations.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) inaugurated the left tunnel on 17 January 2026, permitting access only to light vehicles as construction of the viaduct near the Pune exit is still underway. Motorists have welcomed the development, noting a smoother and quicker travel experience compared to the old Khambataki ghat section, which is known for its sharp curves, steep gradients, and high accident risk. The left tunnel is 1,307 metres long, while the right tunnel measures 1,224 metres.
Once both tunnels become fully operational, the travel time through the ghat section is expected to reduce significantly from 30–45 minutes to just 10–15 minutes. The project is designed to enhance road safety, ease traffic congestion, and substantially improve travel efficiency along this vital corridor.
