The Centre is set to approve the ₹2,534-crore Common Central Secretariat project in Amaravati, providing a major push to the development of the capital city.
The Union Ministry of Urban Development has forwarded the detailed project report (DPR) to the Union Cabinet for final clearance, after receiving in-principle approval from the Union Finance Ministry. Of the total cost, ₹1,299.08 crore has been allocated for the Secretariat complex, while ₹1,234.91 crore is earmarked for General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) for central government employees.
The project will come up on a 22.53-acre site, with 5.53 acres designated for the Secretariat buildings and around 17 acres for residential towers. It forms part of the larger Amaravati master plan aimed at developing a world-class greenfield capital with a focus on sustainability and modern infrastructure.
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) will undertake construction of the project, which is expected to generate employment and boost economic activity in the region. Meanwhile, the state government is also advancing plans for its own Secretariat towers to house departmental offices.
