CM Vijay to MAWS: Fast-Track ₹30,000-Crore Urban Infra Projects

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has directed the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department to expedite the implementation of Union government-funded projects and ensure the effective execution of initiatives supported under the Urban Challenge Fund (UCF).

While chairing a review meeting on the progress of schemes being undertaken by the department, the Chief Minister underscored the importance of timely project completion and greater coordination among government agencies to achieve sustainable and integrated urban development. He emphasised that infrastructure projects must be executed within prescribed timelines to maximise their economic, social, and developmental benefits.

During the meeting, officials informed the Chief Minister that the Urban Challenge Fund, launched in April this year, has the potential to catalyse urban infrastructure investments of approximately ₹30,000 crore across Tamil Nadu. The fund is expected to support a wide range of projects aimed at enhancing urban services, improving connectivity, upgrading civic amenities, and strengthening public infrastructure in cities and towns throughout the state.

The Chief Minister highlighted the need for strategic planning, efficient resource utilisation, and effective project management to address the evolving infrastructure requirements of rapidly growing urban centres. He also stressed the importance of ensuring that development initiatives contribute to improved quality of life, economic growth, and long-term urban sustainability.

The review meeting reflects the state government’s continued focus on accelerating urban infrastructure development, modernising civic services, and creating resilient, well-connected cities capable of supporting future growth and investment.
