Haryana Cracks Down on Industrial Waste to Save the Yamuna

During a review meeting chaired by Anurag Rastogi, officials highlighted significant progress in wastewater treatment, industrial compliance, and sewerage infrastructure across Haryana.

Officials noted that out of 1,632 million litres per day (MLD) of wastewater flowing through 11 major drains that ultimately discharge into the Yamuna River, nearly 1,000 MLD is currently being treated. Regular water quality monitoring is also being conducted to ensure continued reduction in pollution levels.

To strengthen oversight, the state will establish separate monitoring committees for each drain, chaired by divisional commissioners. These committees will meet twice a month and submit progress reports to the Haryana State Pollution Control Board chairman.

Haryana has also expanded its sewage treatment infrastructure, with 91 sewage treatment plants (STPs) currently operational, offering a combined treatment capacity of 1,543 MLD. In addition, three new STPs with a total capacity of 88 MLD are under construction and expected to be completed by March 2027. The state is also upgrading nine STPs with a capacity of 227 MLD and has proposed nine additional STPs with a combined capacity of 510 MLD.

Industrial wastewater management has also improved, with 17 Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) currently operational, two undergoing upgradation, and eight new CETPs proposed, helping ensure greater compliance with environmental regulations.
