India is still “some years away” from becoming a major semiconductor manufacturing hub, mainly due to a shortage of skilled workers, said David Ku, Co-Chief Operations Officer and Chief Financial Officer at MediaTek.
In a recent briefing, Ku emphasized the complexity and lengthy timeline required to establish semiconductor manufacturing facilities. He noted that even in the U.S., which has a mature industry workforce, it typically takes about four years from the start of construction to mass production.
“For India, where the semiconductor manufacturing workforce is still relatively new, the process could take even longer,” Ku said, highlighting the challenges India faces in building a sufficiently experienced talent pool to support large-scale chip manufacturing.
