Karnataka’s Heritage Trio Set for World-Class Makeover

In a major push to boost regional tourism, the Government of Karnataka has nominated Hampi, Mysuru, and Lakkundi for the Union Government’s Global Destination Development initiative, which aims to develop 50 premium tourist sites nationwide.

Speaking at a state-level consultation workshop near Hampi, Tourism Minister KJ George emphasized that the UNESCO World Heritage Site will receive top priority to become a premier global destination. Concurrently, Mysuru's tourism infrastructure will be modernized to reinforce its cultural legacy, and Lakkundi will be positioned as a primary heritage hub highlighting its unique Kalyana Chalukya architecture.

To ensure seamless execution, the state is collaborating with the Central Government to form a Destination Management Organisation (DMO). This body will unify decision-making across the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the State Archaeology Department, and district administrations. Infrastructure improvements will also include expanding the runway at Jindal Airport near Ballari-Hosapete and requesting enhanced rail connectivity linking major cities to Karnataka’s tourist corridors.
