Kolkata Port's $190 Crore Upgrade Sets Sail

Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has inaugurated its first public-private partnership (PPP) terminal at Khidderpore Docks, marking a major step in modernising the city’s historic port infrastructure.

Developed at a cost of ₹190 crore, the Century Ports Terminal features state-of-the-art facilities, including a mobile harbour crane, barge unloader, advanced yard equipment, and a terminal operating system (TOS). The terminal has an initial handling capacity of 1.65 lakh TEUs and 3.3 lakh tonnes of cargo.

“The inauguration of our first PPP terminal at Khidderpore paves the way for increased cargo handling and the modernisation of other berths. It is the outcome of sustained collaboration and vision,” said SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman.

The 30-year concession agreement for the terminal was signed in 2022. The project is set to enhance cargo movement by integrating multimodal connectivity—road, rail, and inland waterways.

SMPK also announced a pipeline of PPP projects worth over ₹4,000 crore across Kolkata and Haldia docks, expected to become operational within the next year.
