'Make in India' Gets a D2M Boost with HMD Partnership

In a major boost to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, HMD Global has partnered with Free Stream Technologies (incubated at IIT Kanpur), Tejas Networks, and other industry players to manufacture and launch Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) phones in India.

D2M technology is a next-generation innovation that enables mobile devices to receive over-the-top (OTT) content, live TV, audio, video, and text messages directly—without relying on Wi-Fi or traditional internet connections. This initiative supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ and advances India's goal of becoming self-reliant in high-tech manufacturing.

Under the project, a new lineup of affordable feature phones, smartphones, and tablets will be developed using the SL-3000 chipset from Saankhya Labs, which serves as the technological foundation of D2M. This chipset has undergone extensive testing across live networks, confirming its readiness for mass deployment.

By integrating academic research through Free Stream Technologies and leveraging the infrastructure expertise of Tejas Networks, this collaboration aims to position India as a global leader in mobile broadcast technology.
