Mashobra Taps Into the Future: Shimla’s First 24/7 Water Zone

In a significant move to ensure a reliable and uninterrupted drinking water supply, Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) has introduced a 24x7 water supply system in the Mashobra area under the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC).

With this initiative, Mashobra becomes the first locality in Shimla to benefit from continuous water availability, marking a key milestone in the city’s ongoing urban infrastructure development. As part of the rollout, teams from SJPNL, in collaboration with SUEZ, have been actively engaging with residents to gather feedback and promote awareness about responsible water usage.

Residents are being educated on water conservation techniques, efficient consumption practices, and the importance of promptly repairing household leakages to minimize wastage—an essential aspect of managing a continuous supply system. Additionally, door-to-door visits are being carried out to monitor service quality and identify areas that require further improvement.

This project forms part of a larger, phased plan to implement 24x7 water supply across Shimla. To support this transition, key infrastructure—such as new pipelines and water storage facilities—is being developed with assistance from the World Bank. Currently, the city’s daily water demand stands at approximately 45 MLD, sourced from multiple schemes, including the Sutlej river system.
