Modernizing the Move: The Nagpur-Amravati Transport Plan

The Maharashtra government has initiated a major effort to strengthen public transport infrastructure in Nagpur and Amravati districts, focusing on modernising bus stations, expanding the bus fleet, and improving passenger facilities.

During a review meeting at the state legislature in Mumbai on Thursday, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule instructed officials to accelerate upgrades to transport infrastructure. The meeting, also attended by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, focused on improving bus station amenities, increasing bus services, and ensuring more convenient travel for commuters.

Bawankule emphasised that passengers should not face difficulties during the summer months. He directed authorities to ensure buses halt at designated stops, especially during examination periods when students depend heavily on public transport. He also noted that funds could be provided through the District Planning and Development Council if necessary for building or upgrading bus stops and related facilities.

Highlighting long-term urban mobility plans, Bawankule said the government is considering establishing the Nagpur Metropolitan Transport Company to streamline transport planning in the city. A detailed proposal is expected by the end of April, while work at the Amravati depot is scheduled for completion by the end of March.

He also expressed concern over the condition of Nagpur’s Ganeshpeth bus station and ordered immediate improvements. These include installing 200 steel chairs, five water coolers, and a 50-bed dormitory for passengers. The station’s Hirkani room for lactating mothers will also be properly equipped.

Meanwhile, renovation work at the Katol bus station and construction at Kondhali have been completed, while projects at Hingna, Ramtek, and Umred are currently underway.

The initiative is part of the state government’s broader plan to modernise public transport and improve the overall commuting experience across Maharashtra.
