Mumbai Water Metro Gets a ₹150-Crore Local Electric Boost

Maharashtra is expanding electric mobility to its waterways through a new agreement with Zoya Marine Services Pvt. Ltd. to build a ₹150-crore electric boat manufacturing facility in Sindhudurg. Signed at Mantralaya in the presence of Minister for Fisheries and Ports Nitesh Rane, the pact allocates nearly 22 acres at Talawane in Sawantwadi taluka for the state-of-the-art plant.

The facility will produce advanced electric-hybrid passenger vessels dedicated to the proposed ₹6,067-crore Mumbai Water Metro project. By manufacturing these boats locally, the initiative aims to eliminate reliance on imported vessels, boost the state's maritime ecosystem, and create skilled regional jobs.

With the first phase of the Mumbai Water Metro targeted for commercial passenger operations in December 2026, this project establishes one of India’s first dedicated manufacturing hubs for urban electric ferries to power what is envisioned as one of the world's largest urban water transport networks.
