Musi Reborn: HYDRAA Showcases Restoration Success to ADB

A delegation from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which is supporting the rejuvenation of the Musi River, visited the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on April 7, 2026, to review ongoing efforts in lake restoration and water body revival across the city.

During the meeting, HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath presented an overview of the agency’s work, highlighting the restoration of interconnected lakes as a key strategy to improve the health of the Musi River. The ADB team was shown archival visuals demonstrating the transformation of lakes such as Bathukamma Kunta in Amberpet, Bam Rukn-ud-Daula lake, and Nalla Cheruvu in Kukatpally.

Officials said the first phase of the programme covered six lakes, with 14 more planned under the second phase. Ranganath noted that many of these lakes are hydrologically linked to the Musi, making their restoration critical for improving river water quality. He also emphasised the role of sewage treatment plants (STPs) at each site in reducing pollution levels.

The initiative is also aimed at mitigating flood risks, improving groundwater recharge, and strengthening environmental protection measures, with a focus on better stormwater drain management across the city.
