New Town Transformation: CM Mamata Boosts Kolkata's Future

On July 17, 2025, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated five major development projects totaling ₹455.5 crore, four of which are located in New Town, Kolkata. These initiatives aim to boost urban infrastructure, housing, and public amenities.

Among the highlights are two large-scale housing projects for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Lower Income Groups (LIG), developed on seven acres at a combined cost of ₹290 crore. Together, the projects offer 1,210 residential units. The G+14 EWS tower, Nijanna, and the G+15 LIG tower, Sujanna, were constructed on state-allotted land provided free of cost.

Also inaugurated was Susampanna, an eight-storey multi-level parking complex built beside the Biswa Bangla Convention Centre. Spread over two acres and developed at a cost of ₹141 crore, it offers parking capacity for over 1,500 vehicles.

In addition, the Chief Minister launched Taranna, a two-storey cafeteria and open-air theatre located near the Eco Urban Village. Constructed at a cost of ₹10 crore, the facility includes a 200-seat stage and aims to promote leisure, recreation, and cultural gatherings.

These projects reflect the state government’s continued commitment to inclusive urban development and infrastructure expansion in the Kolkata metropolitan area.
