₹500-Crore Karad Flyover Opens One Side for Light Vehicle Trials

A major traffic bottleneck on the Pune–Bengaluru Highway (NH48) at Karad is set to ease with the opening of one carriageway of the newly constructed six-lane flyover for a controlled trial run of light vehicles.

The 3.5-km elevated corridor, part of the Satara–Kagal six-laning project under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, was recently opened to vehicles travelling from Satara towards Kolhapur. The trial phase is intended to evaluate safety, structural performance and commuter experience before the flyover is fully commissioned.

According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the opposite carriageway from Kolhapur to Satara will be opened shortly. Following the completion of minor pending works and rectification of defects, the entire stretch, including the flyover and adjoining highway sections, is expected to become fully operational by July 1.

During the trial period, only light vehicles are being allowed on the flyover, with a speed limit of 40 kmph and restricted daytime operations.

The ₹500-crore project replaces an older four-lane bridge and is expected to significantly improve traffic flow by eliminating congestion at the Karad–Malkapur junctions. Built using precast segments supported by 92 pillars, the flyover is designed to provide uninterrupted movement on one of Maharashtra’s busiest highway corridors.

While commuters have welcomed the reduced travel time, some residents have raised concerns over incomplete finishing works and drainage arrangements. NHAI officials, however, maintained that the trial run is a standard procedure and that remaining works will be completed alongside testing.

Once fully opened, the flyover is expected to substantially cut travel delays and enhance connectivity along the Pune–Bengaluru highway.
