The Telangana government has reiterated its commitment to complete the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel project by December 2026 or January 2027, marking a renewed push to expedite one of the state’s key irrigation initiatives.
During a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the government approved the replacement of the existing tunnel boring machine (TBM) with advanced technology to accelerate the completion of the remaining 12 km of the 44 km tunnel. Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy clarified that the technology upgrade would be carried out without any additional financial burden.
Originally launched under a previous Congress government to divert Krishna River water to Nalgonda district, the project has faced long delays and tragic setbacks, including a tunnel collapse that claimed 12 lives. Despite the challenges, 80% of project funds have already been utilised.
The Cabinet also reviewed the progress of super-specialty hospital projects and discussed plans for the dismantling of a unit at the Ramagundam power plant, as part of the state’s broader infrastructure and public welfare agenda.
