Smart Water: NITK’s New 1-MLD Disinfection Plant

A one-million-litre-per-day water disinfection plant has been inaugurated at the campus of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) in Surathkal, Mangaluru.

The new facility will treat raw water drawn from tube wells and open wells within the campus, supplementing the supply received from the Mangaluru City Corporation. The treatment process involves two-stage filtration, followed by chlorination and ozonation, ensuring the removal of excess iron and other waterborne impurities.

The project has been funded by PETRONET MHB Ltd under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative for 2025–26.

Addressing the gathering, Sudhir Kumar, Managing Director of PETRONET MHB and a 1989 Mechanical Engineering alumnus of NITK, said the initiative underscores the company’s commitment to community welfare and sustainable development. He noted that the plant will significantly benefit thousands of students, faculty, and staff residing on the campus by ensuring a reliable supply of safe drinking water.
