Kakkadampoyil, a popular hill station in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, is set to be transformed into a model ecotourism destination through a joint initiative by the Forest Department and the Koodaranhi Grama Panchayat. The project will span approximately 19 hectares of land.
The initiative was finalized following a visit by Forest Minister A.K. Saseendran and consultations with local leaders and panchayat representatives. With a steady rise in domestic tourism, the development will focus on enhancing visitor facilities in Kakkadampoyil, Nayadampoyil, and Kurishumala.
In the first phase, the Gram Panchayat will focus on establishing key infrastructure, including cafeterias, drinking water facilities, restrooms, and ticket counters. A green protocol will be enforced, along with upgraded waste management systems to ensure environmental sustainability.
The Forest Department will play a pivotal role in guiding tourists along trekking routes and conducting awareness programs on wildlife and forest conservation. Discussions are also in progress to set up a dedicated centre for marketing forest products, aimed at supporting local livelihoods.
A comprehensive Master Plan is currently being drafted, with proposals including the development of a flower valley on adjacent revenue land. Members of the Koodaranhi Panchayat have expressed strong support for the project, emphasizing that this long-awaited initiative will enable villagers to participate in sustainable tourism and benefit from new economic opportunities.
