Water Wise: Assam's 81% Success Story Under Jal Jeevan Mission.

Since its launch in August 2019, the Jal Jeevan Mission has significantly advanced the provision of safe drinking water to rural households in Assam.

Under this Central initiative, Assam has achieved substantial progress, with 5.79 million of its 7.22 million rural households now equipped with tap water connections—raising overall coverage to 81.65 percent. With 5.90 million functional household tap connections in place, the state continues to move steadily toward universal access. The Government of India had initially allocated ₹2.09 trillion for the mission, nearly all of which was utilised by 2024–25 for planning, approvals, and implementation.

As Central financial support for the scheme was set to conclude in March 2024, the Finance Minister has proposed expanding the mission’s scope with an increased outlay in the 2025–26 Budget. The proposal is currently under consideration, underscoring Assam’s commitment to sustaining the progress achieved under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
