Chennai's Water Sources Unite: The Ring Main Pipeline Project

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) is set to launch the Ring Main Pipeline Project to integrate all its water sources and ensure an equitable distribution across the city.

With an investment of ₹2,423 crore, the project is scheduled to commence by June 2025, as announced by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu in the State Budget 2025-26. The 95 km circular pipeline, with diameters ranging from 1 to 1.8 meters, will establish a closed-loop system linking multiple water sources to 11 distribution stations.

Currently, Chennai's five water treatment plants and three desalination plants function independently. This new initiative will enable flexible water supply from any source to any locality, addressing shortages more efficiently.

Additionally, the State government has allocated ₹6,668 crore for combined water supply projects across seven districts and the renovation of 102 drinking water schemes. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board will oversee these improvements to enhance overall efficiency.
