Jawaharnagar's 24 MW Waste-to-Energy Plant Set for August Launch

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has informed the National Green Tribunal (Southern Zone) that the second phase of the Jawaharnagar waste-to-energy (WtE) plant—featuring a 24 MW capacity—is expected to become operational in the first week of August 2025.

In an official affidavit, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan stated that a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) was signed on May 12 between Hyderabad MSW Energy Solutions and the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana (TGSPDCL). The agreement is currently awaiting approval from the Telangana Electricity Regulatory Commission (TGERC).

The plant has received operational clearance from the Boilers Department following successful hydro tests. Steam blowout tests are scheduled for mid-July, setting the stage for full commissioning. The power tariff will be determined by TGERC under Section 62 of the Electricity Act, 2003, taking into account the tipping fee and any applicable government incentives, which must be passed on to the distribution company (discom). Transmission and wheeling charges will be waived by TGTransco, and power may only be drawn from the grid during shutdowns—limited to 11% auxiliary consumption.

Additional WtE developments include an upgraded 14 MW facility in Yacharam, expected to be completed by December 2026, and ongoing efforts to revive the stalled Bibinagar project.
