Telangana Fast-Tracks Crucial Srisailam Left Bank Canal Tunnel Project

The Telangana government has granted administrative approval to resume the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) Tunnel project, designating it as a top-priority initiative.

On August 8, 2025, the state sanctioned Rs 2.36 crore for a helicopter-borne VTEM Plus Magnetic Geophysical Survey to support the design and execution of Tunnels I and II, including the head regulator, under the AMR Project in Nagarkurnool and Nalgonda districts. The survey will be conducted by the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) on a nomination basis, with support from the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and an aerial LiDAR survey.

Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy stated that work is resuming based on expert committee recommendations. The remaining nine-kilometre stretch has long hindered gravity-based water drawal from the Srisailam reservoir, resulting in annual power costs of Rs 750 crore and affecting tribal and fluoride-impacted regions. The geophysical survey aims to detect subsurface structural issues up to 1 km deep.

Tunnelling operations spanning 10 km are set to resume immediately, with the project targeted for completion within the sanctioned budget.
