The Kerala Governor has announced that the Pattissery Dam project in Idukki district is scheduled to be commissioned by February 15.
The project forms part of Kerala’s water entitlement under the Cauvery inter-state river water dispute. In addition, the Banasura Sagar main canal is expected to be completed by May, while the Karappuzha irrigation project is slated for completion by December. In the Governor’s policy address, emphasis was placed on ensuring the safety of the Mullaperiyar Dam, reiterating Kerala’s long-standing position of “Water for Tamil Nadu and Safety for Kerala,” and calling for the constitution of an expert committee to evaluate the structural integrity of the ageing dam.
The address also highlighted the state government’s focus on harnessing the tourism potential of irrigation projects and advancing digital governance within the Kerala Water Authority (KWA). Furthermore, the Governor referred to the implementation of the KM Mani Community Micro-Irrigation Scheme, noting plans to expand its coverage to all cash crops with the aim of creating additional income opportunities for the youth.
