Hot Spot: India Unlocks Its First Geothermal Wells in Ladakh

India has reached a major renewable energy milestone with the successful commissioning of its first and deepest geothermal wells in Ladakh's Puga Valley, spearheaded by the ONGC Energy Centre. Situated at an altitude above 14,000 ft., two exploratory wells were drilled to a depth of 1,000 mtrs. to lay the groundwork for India’s inaugural 1 MW demonstration geothermal power plant.

With recorded temperatures reaching 135°C at just 400 mtrs. depth, the initiative paves the way for advanced reservoir testing, regional energy security, and a reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
