State-run power major NTPC Limited and joint venture Talcher Fertilisers Limited (TFL) have officially submitted applications under the central government’s ₹37,500-crore scheme aimed at promoting surface coal and lignite gasification projects.
The initiative is designed to encourage the conversion of domestic coal and lignite into higher-value industrial products, including syngas, methanol, ammonia, and urea. Following the issuance of requests for proposals on July 7, the Ministry of Coal has actively engaged with prospective applicants who are finalising their proposals. To accommodate the extensive planning required for complex industrial infrastructure, the application structure features rolling windows: as soon as one application round closes, the next round opens immediately the following day. This phased approach provides companies ample time to complete technical assessments, feedstock arrangements, and financial modeling.
Approved by the Union Cabinet on May 13, the scheme carries a total financial outlay of ₹37,500 crore to accelerate domestic coal gasification capabilities, catalyze up to ₹3 lakh crore in investments, and significantly reduce India's dependence on imported feedstocks.
