Odisha's Power Play: OCPL Secures Landmark Coal Block

Odisha Coal and Power Ltd. (OCPL) has become the first government-owned coal mining company in India to secure a commercial coal block through competitive bidding, marking a significant milestone in the state’s energy sector.

OCPL won the Tangardihi North block in Sundargarh district during the Ministry of Coal’s 12th tranche of commercial mine auctions. The partially explored block contains an estimated 1,100 million tonnes of G-13 grade coal, including nearly 400 million tonnes of high-quality reserves at a depth of 410 metres.

The company plans to commence production at 16 million tonnes per annum, with a target to scale up to 50 million tonnes by 2030, potentially generating an annual turnover of ₹10,000 crore. The project is expected to create around 2,500 direct and 3,000 indirect jobs.

OCPL currently operates the Manoharpur and Dip Side Manoharpur coal blocks, supplying coal to the Ib Thermal Power Station of Odisha Power Generation Corporation. Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister K.V. Singh Deo stated that the acquisition will enhance Odisha’s power security and fuel its industrial growth.
