OEC Drills Second Geothermal Well in Ladakh's Puga Valley

In a significant step forward for India's renewable energy ambitions, the ONGC Energy Centre (OEC) has successfully drilled the country’s second geothermal well in the Puga Valley of Ladakh. Operating at a grueling altitude of over 14,000 feet, the team hit its 1,000-meter target depth in about a month—a feat that highlights massive improvements in operational efficiency, speed, and cost-effectiveness over the first drilling campaign. The data gathered from this push offers a clearer roadmap of the complex Puga geothermal field. More importantly, this success lays the groundwork for India’s debut 1 megawatt electric (1 MWe) pilot geothermal power plant, proving OEC's ability to unlock clean energy in the world's most challenging terrains.
