Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL), a public sector enterprise under India’s Department of Atomic Energy, is set to establish a recovery plant in Jharkhand to extract uranium from the tailings generated by state-owned Hindustan Copper Limited, according to a senior company official.
The move is aimed at enhancing the domestic availability of uranium, a strategically important mineral used in nuclear energy production as well as defence-related applications.
Speaking to PTI, Sanjiv Kumar Singh said that Hindustan Copper and UCIL have reached an understanding under which the copper producer will provide its tailings for uranium recovery and processing.
The initiative represents a collaborative effort between the two public sector companies to improve resource utilisation and strengthen India’s supply of critical minerals.
