The Uttarakhand State Cooperative Federation has launched an initiative to revive cooperative-led industrial development through the restoration of two long-idle pharmaceutical manufacturing units—the Cooperative Drug Factory (CDF) in Ranikhet and Uttarakhand State Medicine and Paramedicals Ltd. (UMPL) in Haldoochaur.
Both facilities are being modernized with upgraded machinery, advanced laboratory infrastructure, and enhanced production systems to support large-scale manufacturing of Ayurvedic medicines. According to State Cooperation Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, the revival project is part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen the cooperative sector as a catalyst for economic growth, rural development, and employment generation.
A comprehensive modernization plan has been developed for both units, with a focus on producing high-quality Ayurvedic formulations, including tablets, powders, oils, bhasma, and other herbal products. The initiative is expected to improve manufacturing capabilities while promoting the use of traditional medicinal practices.
Beyond industrial revival, the project is anticipated to create more than 200 direct jobs and provide livelihood opportunities for 500 to 1,000 farmers engaged in the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants. Additional employment is expected across the value chain, including raw material procurement, processing, packaging, transportation, and marketing, contributing to broader rural economic development.
Once fully operational, the two units are projected to generate a combined annual turnover of approximately ₹100 crore, reinforcing Uttarakhand’s position as an emerging center for Ayurvedic medicine manufacturing under a cooperative-driven development model.
